Features [ edit ]
The fish is slightly long and flat. The snouts are short; the upper and lower jaws have a set of tines, each with 2 canines in front, and no back canine teeth. The female body is dark brown and has a dark head. The dorsal fins have dark spots between the first and third spines. The dorsal fins and anal fins have a yellow longitudinal band with a caudal fin. The male fish is blue-green with red-brown patches on the head, dark brown longitudinal bands on the back of the body, dorsal fins, anal fins, and red longitudinal bands on the side of the body. There are some intermittent red stripes on the side of the body. The caudal fins are dark brown in color and blueish green at the end. The body is surrounded by large scales. The scales cover the upper part with small scales. The head has no scales. The chest in front of the dorsal fins is smaller scales and the neck is bare; the pelvic fins are sheath scales. 8 hard dorsal fins, 12 to 14 dorsal fins, 3 anal fin hard spines, and 10 to 12 anal fin soft strips. Up to 35 cm in length.

The fishes inhabit reef platforms, reefs, or gravel areas and feed on sea urchins , crustaceans , and polychaetes .
Economic use [ edit ]
Edible fish can be steamed and eaten with lard. The meat is light and tasteless. In addition, it is brightly coloured and suitable for viewing fish.
